Interiors are in essence compositional, made up of many parts and brought to life by the people who live and work in them. We love to design beautiful yet practical environments. So, we listen closely to our clients, discuss their needs and explore new ways of solving common problems. We mix uncomplicated yet clever planning with an honest use of natural materials. We find this simple approach provides the right foundation for responding sensitively to the brief. |

Our Guarantee
So how can you be sure the design will meet your brief?
The answer is you can’t. But we are confident with our 4 stage design process. A process designed to logically walk you through the design briefing as well as giving you the opportunity for input and feedback. This is how we get it right!
By the end of the initial meeting, if you are not happy with the direction we are taking or the quality of the design service, then you will not be charged any design fees.

Chelsea Hing Design Consultants are interior designers with a strong architectural focus. We are experienced in residential renovations, bar, café & restaurant fit outs and boutique commercial developments.
Our design philosophy is based on interiors taking their cue from the architecture, so they make sense with the surrounding environment. Mix that with clever planning and a practical understanding of how people use space to live & work.
That’s how good design makes good sense.
Prior to establishing Chelsea Hing Design Consultants (CHDC) in 2007, Chelsea Hing MDIA began her career with Nexus Designs, one of Australia’s leading multi-disciplinary design consultancies renowned for their work in producing contemporary Australian interiors. She was nurtured early on under the eye of interiors doyenne Janne Faulkner and rose quickly through the ranks. Whilst at Nexus, she cut her teeth on a wide range of projects for high-end clients gaining extensive experience across the board. After several years at Nexus, she then joined Bates Smart, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious architectural practices.
Realising she was more suited to a creative studio environment, Chelsea went out on her own in early 2007 and has been building a reputation for well considered contemporary interiors ever since. The firm has tasted some early success being shortlisted for the Dulux Colour Awards, IDEA Awards, National Interior Design Awards and profiled in The Age Melbourne Magazine as an up & coming designer to watch.

What we do
We look at how you use a space. We look at how the spaces relate to each other, are they logical? Do they meet the needs of your lifestyle or business? How could they be improved? Then we work backwards to provide a design solution to help you get there. We design floor plans to get the traffic flow right, we detail all the joinery & fitout to meet your brief, we select all wall, floor & ceiling finishes, fixtures & fittings, we design lighting & electrical layouts & provide input on heating & cooling design. We provide a professional drafting service to document all designs & specifications. And if you want, we can help you manage your project until completion.
What we can do for you
We know that undertaking a renovation or fitout is not something you do all the time. So, we’ve designed our service to take the hassle out of it for you. We meet with you on site to get an idea of what you want to achieve. We provide an honest assessment of the scale of the project and your budget and will advise the best way to tackle it. If you need an architect we can recommend one. But in most cases we can manage the design for internal renovations, shop or office fitouts all in house.
What are the costs
Most stages in our design consultancy are fixed price giving you flexibility & control over your budget. We are also available on an hourly rate basis if you need a little extra help with your project but don’t need a full service.
Most clients are unsure of what to expect when it comes to design fees. Our fees are honestly and transparently calculated on the actual amount of work involved, not on a projected percentage, but based instead on the needs of each individual project.
So, consider the scale of your investment. Many clients exhaust their budgets with construction costs and architect or draftsman fees before they realize they need assistance with the interior. Without a designer looking after the interior, there’s a huge part of the detail missing, so critical decisions can be glossed over during planning or changed on the hop during construction wasting time & costing you money.
Our fees start at $135/hr + GST but reduce when a larger amount of work is required.
The design process
Undertaking a large project can be daunting and requires making a lot of tough decisions. We provide the roadmap. Our four-step design process is very collaborative to make sure we take a detailed brief, solve your design problems & identify a big picture concept. We then meticulously plan, document and manage your project to achieve it.

Pre Design where the project specifics are gathered and a ‘mud map’ sketch plan is produced to clarify your requirements. Indicative budget estimates are discussed/obtained and the planning applications are submitted (by others) if required.
Concept Design develops the sketch plan into detailed plans & elevations, colours, materials, finishes & fittings selections to demonstrate the look & feel as well as the practical requirements.
Documentation converts the concept design into CAD drawings, specifications are finalised and interior construction documents are prepared for tendering & building.
Project Management calling of tenders, answering queries & preparation of final drawings & documents for construction, inspection of building works during construction of the interior to ensure the design outcome is a successful one. |
